Overall, considering the cost (10,700 yen), it was cheaper and more time-efficient than staying at a hotel and taking the Shinkansen, so it wasn't bad. In terms of comfort, it was just okay, but this might be the biggest downside for many people (though I can say it was better than trying to sleep on a red-eye flight).
We took the bus from Tokyo to Hakone. It took some time, but it was comfortable and relaxing. We also enjoyed the scenery along the way. The bus had a toilet on board.
I think Japan's night buses are the best and most peaceful compared to night buses in other countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
Meitetsu Bus had announcements in both Japanese and English at sightseeing spots, and the ride was comfortable.
Buses in Tokyo are generally quite complicated. Multiple companies operate buses, and route numbers can overlap. Many signs are displayed only in Japanese, and you need to understand the two payment models (boarding from the front and boarding from the middle).
We used highwaybus.com a couple of times last month and it went smooth every time. We also used it for the trip from Shinjuku to Fuji. Don't worry!
I highly recommend highway buses! I've taken them from Tenjin to Shimonoseki and Nagasaki. For the Shimonoseki bus I actually just used my IC card. For Nagasaki I just bought a ticket at the bus station (It was like 2700 yen-ish) and it drops you right at Nagasaki Station.
I think it's a good deal for the price with the Bus Pass and it was surprisingly comfortable. I wouldn't do three nights in a row again though.
The seats were not comfortable. I had a neck cushion and I was still uncomfortable. Overall the trips were decent. The night bus was cheaper than a hotel room.
This is so cool! I had no idea such comfortable overnight buses existed in Japan. Definitely considering this for my next trip.
I took this bus last year, and it was surprisingly comfortable. Saved on a night's accommodation too!
Willer Express buses are top-notch. Clean, punctual, and the seats are spacious. Highly recommend!
Didn't know buses could be this luxurious. Looks more comfortable than some hotels!
Great value for money. The semi-private seats gave me the privacy I needed during the trip.
Before boarding a highway bus, please be aware of these three COVID-19 prevention
measures!
Even though the state of emergency has been lifted, COVID-19 countermeasures are still
necessary when riding highway buses.
In addition to the measures taken by each bus company, here are some COVID-19
precautions you can take as a passenger!
Many buses have alcohol-based sanitizers installed. Please check the COVID-19
countermeasures of each bus company.
It's also a good idea to carry a portable alcohol-based sanitizer, especially for
highway buses where luggage must be kept
compact.
Some bus companies distribute new masks upon boarding. In addition to preventing COVID-19, wearing a mask can also protect your throat from the dry air inside the bus.
At bus stops and terminals, it is important to maintain social distance by keeping a
distance from others in line or, if you have reserved a seat, by choosing a seat with as
much empty space around it as possible. Some bus companies may also take measures to
leave seats empty.
Finally... Although theme parks and tourist attractions are gradually reopening, if you
are feeling even slightly unwell, please refrain from boarding the bus.
Most companies allow one piece of luggage per person with a total of three sides (length,
width, and height) measuring up to 100 cm. While the specific size limits may vary slightly
between bus companies, most adhere to the same size and quantity restrictions as for
carry-on luggage on airplanes.
However, there are exceptions, so be sure to inquire about the allowable luggage size when
checking about the availability of luggage compartments.
Dangerous goods (explosives, flammable items, knives), folding bicycles, musical
instruments, pets, golf bags, sports equipment, long and thin items (such as bamboo swords),
etc.
Other fragile items cannot be checked as damage cannot be
One essential item is the necessary documents for boarding, such as tickets.
The items you need to bring vary depending on the booking method, but be sure to bring
your booking email, boarding ticket, and receipt as they will be required for boarding.
Neck pillow・・・By inflating it to create a concave shape, it supports your
head and neck while you sleep.
Mask・・・The bus interior is very dry year-round. Additionally, as it is an
enclosed space, it is essential for health management.
Earplugs・・・With earplugs, you can shut out the sounds around you. However,
be careful as you may not hear announcements such as service area breaks.
Eye
mask・・・This is a must-have item for those who usually turn off all the lights
when they sleep. Although the curtains are usually closed during the journey, some light
inevitably enters the bus from the driver's front windshield.
Makeup remover sheets・・・Indispensable for overnight bus trips where you
cannot wash off makeup with water.
Hand cream, facial mist・・・The interior of the night bus is extremely dry!
Highly recommended for those who are concerned about dry skin.
Disposable slippers +
socks・・・It's unpleasant to spend a whole night in shoes. Bare feet can get cold
at night. Slippers and socks are a solution to this.
If you realize you have forgotten something, don't panic. Remain calm and follow the steps below.
When contacting them, inform them of your bus reservation details (boarding date, boarding
and alighting locations, bus name, etc.) and that you have lost something. If the bus
company can be identified, provide information about the lost item (name, color, shape, etc.
and where in the bus you think you left it) and have them check.
The method of receiving the item varies depending on the bus company. It will usually be sent to you by the bus company collect on delivery, but some companies may allow you to pick up the item at their office, so be sure to check the method of receipt when you inquire.
If there is a possibility that you lost it on the bus, first contact the bus company. Also, since there is a possibility that you lost it after getting off, you should also contact the police.
The bus interior is a closed, airtight space. It is best to avoid smelly bento boxes and snacks.
Alcohol is also a concern. Alcohol is also classified as having a strong odor.
Some bus companies may refuse to allow passengers who are drinking. Even if you are
confident in your
alcohol tolerance, it is recommended that you refrain from drinking when taking a night bus.
Talking on the phone is not allowed.
Many bus companies announce over the PA system to set your phone to silent mode or turn it
off.
Listening to music is not prohibited, but please pay close attention to the volume to avoid disturbing others.
It is best to avoid using smartphones and game machines as much as possible.
The reason is that the sound of pressing buttons and the light emitted from game machines
may wake up other passengers.
When reclining your seat, please ask the person behind you before reclining.
Inside the bus Smoking is prohibited inside the bus.
Smokers should use the break time.
